Man charged in NYC antisemitic stabbing is released on bail

A young man, aged 23, has been charged with a hate crime following an incident in which he allegedly made antisemitic remarks and stabbed a Jewish individual near a Jewish center in New York City last December. This case has since taken a significant turn as the accused, Armani Charles, has been released on bail.

During his initial court appearance in Brooklyn, Charles entered a plea of not guilty and was subsequently released after posting a bail amount set at $50,000, as reported by the Times of Israel, which referenced court documentation.

The charges against Charles include attempted assault, assault, aggravated harassment, menacing, and a hate crime. These stem from the alleged attack on December 16 in the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn, where he reportedly stabbed a Jewish man in the chest.

Authorities have confirmed that the victim, a 35-year-old man, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and he received medical attention at a hospital nearby.

The victim, identified as Elias Rosner, recounted the incident to the New York Post, stating that his attacker was walking down the street while uttering antisemitic slurs. This alarming episode underscores the persistent issue of antisemitism and the challenges faced by Jewish communities in the city.

The victim, identified as Elias Rosner, told the New York Post in December that his assailant was walking down the street while making antisemitic comments.

“I’m going to kill Jewish people, I’m going to kill a Jew today, I don’t give a f—,” Rosner recalled. “We wouldn’t be in this mess if the Holocaust had happened.”

Footage of the incident circulated on social media showing the two men squaring off in a minuteslong dispute. The eventual victim followed the suspect after their verbal confrontation initially broke off, at which point the suspect turned and stabbed at the victim.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force investigated the incident.

Charles is scheduled to make his next court appearance in April.
