A convicted murderer on the run in Tennessee reportedly helped himself to cold beer and garlic bread before stealing a truck and three firearms during a 10-day escape, authorities said.
Jacob Morley, 28, is serving a life sentence for the brutal 2022 killing of his co-worker. He was captured in another state Tuesday, after escaping from the Northwest Correctional Complex on Oct. 25.
During the escape, Morley took refuge in a farm shed in Marion, Illinois, where investigators said he appeared to settle in.
Authorities said the fugitive drank beer and prepared garlic bread as officers searched for him.
“How he ended up in Marion is kind of a mystery,” Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich said.
Diederich said investigators have found no evidence that anyone helped Morley.
Investigators believe Morley walked about three miles to the farm after abandoning another stolen truck he had used following his prison escape.
Surveillance footage showed him leaving the vehicle and appearing at several locations along Route 13. The area’s rugged terrain made it difficult for police to track him, Diederich said.

It remains unclear why Morley traveled to the area near Kansas City, more than 350 miles from the Tennessee prison.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Morley admitted stealing a second truck from the Marion farm, along with two rifles and a shotgun.
He also left behind a note apologizing for taking the property, Diederich said.
Morley was convicted in the 2022 murder of his co-worker, Cody Birchfield.
Birchfield disappeared for several weeks before his body was found stuffed inside a box and concealed beneath Morley’s home.
Tennessee District Attorney General Danny Goodman Jr. said he intends to bring additional charges against Morley.
