According to the ATF, agents were carrying out the operation around 5:30 p.m. when an ATF special agent and a task force officer opened fire after undercover agents were allegedly targeted in an attempted armed robbery. Officials said the task force officer is a member of the Chicago Police Department.
The two wounded suspects were taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where authorities said they were listed in stable condition.
Officials also said a third person has been accused of assaulting an officer.
Witnesses who declined to appear on camera told ABC7 they heard several gunshots and saw a person wearing a ski mask running through the neighborhood before a large police response flooded the area.
Investigators could be seen surrounding a white vehicle. A couple of blocks away at Martin Lane and Martin Court, more agents focused on a black Mitsubishi.
The ATF said Illinois State Police, the FBI and Chicago Police Department assisted in the investigation.
COPA is also investigating because a Chicago police officer was involved.
