Man charged with cousin in late-night shooting in east Alabama

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – The Opelika Police Department has reported that a late-night shooting in Opelika resulted in one man’s death, with his cousin now facing charges. The motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed.

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, at around 11:38 p.m., Opelika Communications received a 911 call regarding a shooting incident at the 1200 block of Samford Place. Responding officers discovered a 38-year-old male with a fatal gunshot wound inside a residence. He was declared dead on the scene. Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton confirmed that Quintaveious Johnson, 38, of Opelika, was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m. His remains have been transferred to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.

The victim’s cousin, 41-year-old Jamarlo Johnson, was apprehended at the location. Johnson faces a murder charge and is currently in custody. Police have noted that the shooting was of a domestic nature, though they have yet to disclose the cause of the conflict between the cousins.
