This election cycle has once again highlighted the sharp ideological divisions within the Democratic Party, as several progressive candidates have won primary contests while seeking to expand the influence of the party’s left flank in Congress.
Those tensions were also evident after the September 2025 assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, 31, at an event at Utah Valley University. In the hours and days following the news, a number of far-left commentators and public figures — including some educators, health care workers and elected officials — drew widespread criticism for making celebratory or inflammatory remarks about the conservative activist’s death.
Roughly 10 months later, a preliminary hearing is underway in a Provo, Utah, courtroom for Tyler Robinson, the man accused in Kirk’s killing. According to RedState, Kirk’s wife, Erika, has attended the proceedings with other family members, facing Robinson in court for the first time as prosecutors present details likely to be deeply difficult for the family to hear.
