Dramatic dashcam video shows a Nevada crossing guard rushing to protect a mother and her two children as a speeding car tore through a school zone.
Kae’la Leon Guerrero was crossing with her 5-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son at a Las Vegas school zone crosswalk on the morning of Aug. 26 when a vehicle suddenly came racing toward them, Fox5 reported.
The footage shows crossing guard Richard Jones reacting instantly, stepping directly into the vehicle’s path and forcing the driver to slam on the brakes.
“And from a distance, we saw a car coming, but not knowing that he was speeding towards us,” Guerrero told the outlet. “If that cross guard didn’t jump in front of that car, something bad would have definitely happened,” she said.
The driver left the scene after the frightening near-miss, which Guerrero said left her children badly shaken.
Jones, who works as a crossing guard for All City Management Services, said the vehicle appeared to be traveling about 35 mph in a 15 mph school zone near Pinecrest Academy St. Rose.
“I don’t know how many times I said thank you for what happened yesterday, but he’s an amazing man. And my kids thank him every day actually,” Guerrero said of Jones.
“Honestly I just try to do the job the best way I can,” Jones said modestly.
A group of people crossing the street also yelled, “Hey Richard you’re a hero!” at Jones while he was being interviewed.
Guerrero’s son has since gifted Jones a care package — including restaurant gift certificates, a handwritten thank-you note, and a neck fan to keep him cool on duty — in recognition of his courageous actions.
