Authorities in Bradford County said the woman was arrested peacefully and taken into custody without incident.
STARKE, Fla. — A deadly shooting in Starke early Monday left one man dead and a woman jailed, according to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, which says the violence followed an argument between the couple.
Deputies said the confrontation happened around 6 a.m. Monday in the Meadows Drive area of Starke.
The woman now faces a second-degree murder charge after investigators say she shot and killed her boyfriend.
Investigators identified the suspect as 42-year-old Stephanie Michelle Johnson and the victim as her 41-year-old boyfriend, David James. Officials said the pair had been arguing for several days before the shooting occurred.
Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith said deputies arrived at the home and found James dead in the master bedroom. Johnson was detained at the scene and later taken into custody.
Smith said Johnson has cooperated with investigators as the case moves forward.
“I’m going to be honest and put it out. There’s no secret here, she has admitted to doing the shooting,” Smith said.
The sheriff said the shooting is a reminder that people experiencing dangerous relationships should seek help before a situation escalates.
“We have a ton of resources now to help individuals get away from a bad relationship. Don’t wait till something reaches this point that we have tragedy, then it’s too late,” said Smith
