Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension drops out of ICE-involved shooting investigation

In a recent development, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported that the federal agent involved in the shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis sustained internal injuries. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin informed Fox News on Wednesday that the agent, identified as Jonathan Ross of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), experienced internal bleeding in his torso after being hit by Good’s vehicle.

While specifics regarding the severity of Ross’s injuries remain unclear, it was noted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that he received hospital treatment on January 7. He was subsequently released on the same day, suggesting that the injuries, though concerning, were manageable.

This health update emerges after Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey had previously downplayed the seriousness of the agent’s injuries, sparking some controversy. Frey, in a statement last Friday, remarked that the agent’s hip injury seemingly lacked severity, jokingly comparing it to an injury one might sustain from casually shutting a refrigerator door.

The incident occurred during federal operations in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026, where 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by Ross, as law enforcement officials were actively engaged at the scene. The situation continues to unfold, with differing accounts of the events leading up to and following the tragic encounter.

“The ICE agent walked away with a hip injury that he might as well have gotten from closing a refrigerator door with his hips,” he told reporters Friday. “Give me a break. No, he was not ran over. He walked out of there with a hop in his step.”

Cellphone videos of the encounter have prompted a mix of reactions from officials and lawmakers.

Federal officials have said that when Good pulled forward in her vehicle toward the ICE officer, he acted in self-defense and described the driver’s actions as “an act of domestic terrorism.” Authorities have also said that Good had been following and harassing federal officers earlier that day.

“Many of you have been told this law enforcement officer wasn’t hit by a car, wasn’t being harassed, and murdered an innocent woman,” Vice President JD Vance said Friday in a post on X. “The reality is that his life was endangered and he fired in self defense.”

Meanwhile, Frey called any self-defense argument “garbage.”

Other Democrats and some local residents, however, have condemned the shooting as a murder and called for Ross’ prosecution.
