Inside Downtown LA utility box that's actually a theater

In the bustling heart of downtown Los Angeles, a small yet intriguing stage has emerged, captivating the attention of passersby. This unconventional performance venue, known as the Electrical Box Theatre, ingeniously transforms a mundane utility box into a captivating miniature stage.

Conceived by street artist S.C. Mero, this pint-sized theater is cleverly nestled inside a standard metal cabinet at the corner of Hewitt Street and Traction Avenue. From the outside, it appears to blend seamlessly with its urban surroundings, thanks to a faux-concrete base that mimics the typical cityscape. Yet, upon unlocking the combination locks, a vibrant, velvet-lined interior is revealed, reminiscent of the opulence of early 20th-century silent movie palaces on Broadway. Inside, two framed paintings of electrical boxes, a clock, and a gold mirror grace the red velvet walls, adding to its nostalgic charm.

The beauty of the Electrical Box Theatre lies in its simplicity and accessibility. It invites anyone with a creative spark to step up and perform, whether it be a sketch, song, poem, dance, or even an open mic session. The possibilities are as limitless as the imagination. Booking the venue is straightforward; enthusiasts need only to reach out to Mero via Instagram to secure a time slot and receive the lock code.

This innovative space, which made its debut in February, epitomizes the essence of street theater in its most stripped-down form. Mero shared her vision on social media, expressing, “I’m not much for 2-D, but I imagined a faux 3-D/4-D box people could go inside and perform with.”

In a city teeming with artistic expression, the Electrical Box Theatre stands out as a testament to creativity, turning an ordinary piece of infrastructure into an extraordinary cultural hub.

“I’m not much for 2-D, but I imagined a faux 3-D/4-D box people could go inside and perform with,” Mero wrote in a social media post.

The theater celebrated a soft opening on Feb. 20, with musical ensembles, a saxophone performance, and original poetry readings.
