Pro-Palestine protesters are aiming to shut down the Story Bridge in Brisbane in a proposed march later this month.

The important bridge in Australia’s third-largest city is the proposed focal point for a march planned by activist group Justice for Palestine on Sunday, August 24.

It comes less than a week after a high-profile march over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where an estimated 90,000 people took part in a pro-Palestine protest after the Supreme Court blocked NSW Premier Chris Minns’ plan to block the match.

“We are taking this protest to the Story Bridge to reflect the urgency of the situation in Gaza,” Justice for Palestine said in a post on their Facebook page.

“This is the same bridge our Lord Mayor refused to light in the colours of the Palestinian flag, denying solidarity to a grieving community.”

The group has sent a request to Queensland Police to hold the protest, which would begin in Raymond Park and finish in Centenary Place in Fortitude Valley.

Queensland Police have confirmed they are assessing the request for the protest march.

“QPS have received a Notice of Intention to Hold a Public Assembly which is currently being assessed,” A Queensland Police spokesperson told 9News.com.au

“The QPS recognises that every person has the right to peacefully assemble under Human Rights Act and Peaceful Assembly Act.”

Around 7000 protestors are estimated to take part in the protest, though there is a good chance that number could be dwarfed; only 10,000 people were expected at Sydney’s protest, but police estimate up to 90,000 people took part.

It is not known whether Queensland Premier David Crisafulli will take similar action to Minns, who sought to block the march on the Harbour Bridge on safety grounds.

The Premier has been approached by 9News.com.au for comment.
