Eight individuals associated with a midwife from the Houston area, who is accused of conducting unauthorized abortions, have been apprehended and charged with the unauthorized practice of medicine, as announced by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday.
In an online statement, Paxton characterized the group as “a cabal of abortion-loving radicals” who, according to him, endangered those they claimed to assist.
These arrests stem from ongoing investigations into Maria Margarita Rojas, 49, who was the first to be charged under the Texas Human Life Protection Act earlier in 2025.
Cesar Franco leads pro-life and anti-abortion supporters, engaging in prayer through the recitation of the Rosary with the Tradition Family Property organization on February 28, 2024, in protest of a perceived pro-abortion statue placed at Cullen Family Plaza at the University of Houston.
Hudson said Paxton “went after Rojas, a licensed midwife dedicated to helping her pregnant patients.”
“Clinics that provided legitimate, affordable health services to numerous families in Houston, particularly low-income, uninsured immigrants with limited healthcare options, were heartlessly closed by him,” she continued.
“It’s no coincidence these closures are occurring alongside rising anti-immigrant attitudes nationwide. Healthcare workers in Texas should be respected, not criminalized,” she remarked.
