Video: The Emmy Awards Deliver a Mostly Politics Free Show

The 2026 Emmy Awards wrapped Monday night with a largely politics-free ceremony, as winners kept the atmosphere upbeat through heartfelt speeches, gratitude and a few brief calls to action.

Stephen Colbert, whose late-night program was canceled earlier this year, won the Emmy for Best Variety Series. Rather than focus on his own achievement, the former host used his acceptance speech to spotlight the show’s crew and urge industry leaders to hire them.

“The thing about these late shows is that besides being a really good steady job, they require so many people,” Colbert said. He described the programs as valuable training grounds where young professionals learn to work under deadlines, cooperate and collaborate—skills he said represent the future of the entertainment business.

Following a warm ovation from the audience, Colbert returned to the importance of supporting his colleagues.

“I want you to know, I got some great news: They are all tech avail,” he said, drawing laughs before delivering a direct appeal. “Hire them. They will make your show better. They will make your day easier.”

The ceremony’s limited political commentary came mostly in short remarks. Alan Cumming, accepting the award for Best Reality Series, ended his speech by encouraging Americans to participate in the upcoming election.

“Tonight, we have received the most votes, but tomorrow is voter registration day in this country, so please make sure you are registered to vote,” Cumming said. “The time for talk is over. It is now time to vote, America!”

Sally Field offered an emotional tribute to country music icon Dolly Parton before accepting the award for Best Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. During her acceptance speech, Field also voiced opposition to the proposed Paramount-WBD merger.

“We can’t let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged,” Field said.
