Guilty plea and 20-year sentence in Febres murder case

Beverly Febres’ body was discovered in Marco Lake, not far from San Marco Square, prompting an investigation that eventually identified Kamaree Singleton as the perpetrator after initially arresting the wrong individual.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Kamaree Singleton, the man who admitted to murdering Beverly Febres, a Jacksonville mother found in Marco Lake in July 2022, has now pled guilty and received his sentence on Monday.

Singleton, 23, became the second suspect apprehended for Febres’ murder after the first arrest targeted Febres’ boyfriend, Dedris Wesley, who was wrongly accused by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Charges against Wesley were dropped when an investigation led police to Singleton, who confessed to the murder.

What happened?

According to police documents, Singleton had an altercation with Wesley prior to the incident. Febres attempted to intervene and fired at Singleton, grazing him on his side, according to an arrest report.

Another individual, who assisted in disposing of the body, reported that shortly afterward, Febres went back to Singleton’s residence, where Singleton fatally shot her, according to police.

Singleton fatally shot Febres twice in the head. He then enlisted help to discard her body in Marco Lake, a private body of water just a short distance from San Marco Square.

Febres was found dead July 12, 2022. Her car was found days later on Blackard Road in Arlington with the passenger seat “covered in blood,” according to police.

After Singleton’s arrest and confession, he was found incompetent to stand trial due to mental health concerns. After treatment, he was deemed competent again and pleaded not guilty.

However, on Monday, Singleton changed his plea to guilty. With the agreement of Febres’ family, a Duval County judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
