Handcuffed Inmate Escapes Restraints and Assaults Deputy During Courthouse Escape Attempt

A newly sentenced Ohio man allegedly slipped free of his handcuffs, struck a bailiff and raced toward the courthouse exit before deputies subdued him, according to video released by the sheriff’s office.

Timothy J. Reaggle, 20, of Wellsville, allegedly attacked two Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office deputies Monday after learning he had been sentenced to a year in prison in an unrelated case, local reports said.

Columbiana County Sheriff Brian McLaughlin told WFMJ that both deputies suffered broken bones and were later released from the hospital.

The sheriff’s office video shows a deputy escorting Reaggle through a courthouse hallway shortly after his sentencing. Reaggle appears to break free of his restraints, allegedly punch the deputy and run down the corridor.

During the alleged escape, Reaggle collides with another deputy, sending the officer to the floor.

Reaggle then heads toward the courthouse entrance. The footage shows him sliding down the steps and running toward the front doors before deputies used a Taser to stop him and took him into custody.

The video also captures people rushing to help the injured deputies. WFMJ reported that one deputy was later seen on the floor with blood on his head while pressing a paper towel to his face.

Reaggle had been sentenced to one year in prison in connection with a case dating to Feb. 14, 2025, WKBN reported.

He pleaded guilty in July to aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, aggravated menacing, failure to comply and two misdemeanor assault charges.

McLaughlin said Reaggle remains in the Columbiana County Jail and will later be transferred to state prison.

He also faces the possibility of additional charges related to the courthouse incident.

According to WFMJ, McLaughlin said the new charges are expected to include assault on a police officer and felony escape.
