Authorities from the South Carolina Department of Corrections reported that a drone delivered an unusual payload of steaks, crab legs, and Old Bay seasoning to Lee Correctional Institution.
BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — The department revealed that the drone was used to smuggle contraband into the prison, suggesting an attempt to supply drugs and various other items to inmates.
An official from the department noted that the drone made its drop during the early hours at the Bishopville maximum-security facility.
In a social media update, the SCDC humorously remarked, “It appears someone was gearing up for an early festive feast featuring an Old Bay-crab boil and steak dinner, accompanied by marijuana and cigarettes — all courtesy of a drone at Lee CI.”
Law enforcement officials successfully retrieved the drone and the contraband package. However, the department spokesperson mentioned that no arrests have been made thus far.
Among the items dropped were two sizable bags of marijuana, loose tobacco, a carton of cigarettes, and additional contraband, as confirmed by authorities.
The spokesperson said the South Carolina Department of Corrections fights nightly attacks from drones attempting to bring in items to inmates.
