WASHINGTON — Ike Turner Jr., the son of singer Ike and Tina Turner, has died. He was 67.
Jacqueline Bullock, Tina Turner’s niece, confirmed the passing of Ike Turner Jr. to the New York Post and TMZ at the age of 67. The official cause of death has not been disclosed, but TMZ indicates kidney failure as the reason.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of my cousin, Ike Turner Jr. He was more than just a cousin to me; he was like a brother, as we grew up together in the renowned household,” Bullock expressed to the New York Post. “Our family is truly thankful for the flood of condolences and kindly asks for privacy during this time.”
According to TMZ, Ike Jr. had been dealing with “severe heart issues” for some time and had a stroke in early September.
His death comes one day after his birthday.
Ike Jr.’s sister-in-law Afida Turner remembered the 67-year-old in a tribute posted to social media Sunday.
“REST IN PEACE IKE JR: YOU WERE AN AMAZING BROTHER-IN-LAW. I’M GLAD I SPOKE WITH YOU ON THE PHONE BEFORE YOU LEFT US. LOVE YOU. RIP 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏,” wrote Afida in an Instagram message.
Ike Jr. was born in 1958 to Ike Sr. and Lorraine Taylor. Tina Turner later adopted him and his brother Michael as her own.
After Ike Sr. and Tina Turner’s turbulent separation, Ike Jr. went on to work as the “Proud Mary” singer’s sound engineer for a brief period.
Ike Jr. also produced his father’s 2006 “Risin’ With the Blues” album, earning him and his father a Grammy Award for best traditional Blues album.
Earlier in 2023, he faced arrest and charges related to crack cocaine possession and tampering with evidence, as reported by People. His arrest occurred just weeks before Tina Turner’s passing in May 2023.
