LA Riots Immigration Palantir and Public Opinion

In May of 2025, the Los Angeles riots, sparked by immigration enforcement actions, have become a focal point for Republican and conservative media efforts to bolster support for the “Big Beautiful Bill” on immigration and Palantir’s surveillance capabilities.

Consequently, the violence, described by Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell as “escalating” and “increasingly worse and more violent,” has provided a compelling narrative backdrop for conservative influencers to advocate for more stringent immigration policies and enhanced domestic surveillance.

Furthermore, this deliberate portrayal, observed across social media and news platforms, seeks to influence public opinion in favor of initiatives that might considerably affect civil liberties and privacy.

The disturbances erupted over the weekend following raids and search warrants executed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, which resulted in over 40 arrests. These law enforcement actions triggered widespread unrest, as demonstrators passionately opposed the detentions.

The timing of these operations, conducted during a period of heightened tensions, worsened the situation, leading to chaotic scenes that dominated social media and news outlets.

Videos and photos circulating on platforms like X depict chaotic scenes: protesters tearing up sidewalks to throw rocks at law enforcement on freeways, setting fire to California Highway Patrol vehicles, and shooting fireworks at officers on horseback.

The Post Millennial reported on the escalation. It noted:

“The protests turned into riots over the weekend as officers declared an unlawful assembly. Waymo cars that arrived on the scene were vandalized and torched, with rioters smashing the cars with skateboards, rocks and other objects. Law enforcement vehicles also came under attack and rioters stormed onto the 101 freeway shutting down traffic.”

The violence disrupted the city. It also served as a rallying point for conservative narratives. Breitbart’s coverage highlighted the severity. It quoted McDonnell:

“The violence from protesters involved in the pro-migration, foreign-flag-waving riots in Los Angeles is ‘escalating,’” he revealed during a press conference. He added, “This violence that I’ve seen is disgusting. It’s escalated now since the beginning of this incident. What we saw the first night was bad. What we’ve seen subsequent to that is getting increasingly worse and more violent. Tonight we had individuals out there shooting commercial grade fireworks at our officers, that can kill you.”

Conservative media figures, such as Laura Loomer, seized on these events to push for the domestic use of Palantir in spite of empowering the Government surveillance of Americans.

This bill includes provisions for enhanced border security and domestic surveillance. Loomer’s X post framed the riots as a consequence of lax immigration policies. She argued:

This narrative aligns with the broader conservative push. It leverages the riots to justify a surveillance state.

Ian Carroll offered a counterpoint. He challenged Loomer’s stance on X He stated,

“Laura- how would you feel if it was deployed to target Jews? Not great right? Once you give the government a power- you never get it back. You are giving that power to every future administration. So the question should always be- what if this was used to target me?”

Carroll’s retort emphasizes the dangers of unchecked surveillance. It warns of the broader implications for civil liberties.

The apparent disregard among Republican and conservative circles is concerning. They prioritize short-term security gains.

Moreover, this echoes a troubling trend where short-term security gains are prioritized over long-term civil liberties.

Consequently, the rush to embrace Palantir’s surveillance suggests a willingness to sacrifice fundamental freedoms. This stance could have far-reaching consequences for our Constitutional Republic.

Furthermore, the riots demand decisive action against illegal immigration. The government must end illegal immigration and massively increase deportations. However, this must happen without Palantir’s surveillance infrastructure.

Additionally, the chaos and violence in Los Angeles require a robust response. We must prioritize border security and enforcement without compromising privacy and civil liberties.

The challenge lies in balancing these imperatives. We must ensure that the fight against illegal immigration does not pave the way for a surveillance state, as this could undermine the very freedoms we seek to protect.
