Dead baby found in portable toilet at music festival in Michigan

ROTHBURY, Mich. — Police in Michigan are asking for the public’s help after a baby’s body was discovered inside a portable restroom at a rural music festival over the weekend.

Michigan State Police said the infant was less than one month old. The body was found Sunday morning by an employee of a restroom service company during routine maintenance on the final day of the Electric Forest festival.

Investigators have not released the baby’s cause of death, the child’s sex, or whether they have identified a parent, guardian or anyone else connected to the infant.

An autopsy was performed Monday, and Michigan State Police Lt. Pat Agema said further information would be shared after investigators review the findings. As of Tuesday, Agema said the death had not been labeled a homicide.

The festival opened Thursday and regularly attracts tens of thousands of fans for electronic dance music and jam band performances. Many attendees stay on-site at the 2,000-acre Double JJ Resort, located near Lake Michigan. Police said the baby was found in the event’s camping area and are appealing to anyone who may have seen something or has information that could assist the investigation.

Electric Forest organizers shared the state police notice Monday, telling festivalgoers that “it causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you.” They also echoed the request from law enforcement, encouraging attendees to “assist in any way.”

Organizers did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment.
