Inset: Travis Briscoe (Sedgwick County Jail). Background: Police in Wichita, Kansas, investigate the scene after Briscoe allegedly ran over a man with his truck (KAKE).
A Kansas semitruck driver is on trial after authorities say a dispute over a parking space at a Wichita truck stop turned fatal when he ran over a man who had lain down behind his rig.
Travis Briscoe, 47, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Abdelmuttalib Mohamed, 57, of Georgia. The confrontation unfolded shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 13, 2025, as both men were attempting to back their semitruck trailers into the same parking spot at the truck stop.
According to investigators, the two drivers argued over who had claim to the space. Mohamed reportedly insisted it belonged to him, repeating, “my spot, my spot.” Briscoe later told police he had difficulty understanding Mohamed because of his accent. At some point, Mohamed allegedly lay down behind Briscoe’s truck, leading Briscoe to ask him, “what are you doing?” while pointing out other open spots in the lot.
Briscoe then returned to his cab and allegedly assumed Mohamed had moved because he could no longer see him. As Briscoe began backing up, another truck driver started honking, according to a probable cause affidavit. Briscoe pulled forward and discovered he had run over Mohamed, the affidavit stated.
Briscoe called 911 after the incident.
Witnesses told police Briscoe appeared to be “angry and cussing” inside his cab before backing up in what they described as a “dangerous and reckless” manner. They also reported hearing him say “lay down.”
Investigators also reviewed video from Briscoe’s cab, which appeared to capture him yelling “lay down motherf—er” at Mohamed before the fatal collision. The footage also appeared to show Mohamed attempting to back into the parking spot before Briscoe arrived.
Cops arrested Briscoe and took him to the Sedgwick County Jail, where he’s been ever since.
Briscoe declined to speak with detectives, but he reportedly admitted to running Mohamed over in a phone call he made from the jail about 10 days after the incident.
The trial began on Monday.
