David Harbour rants about capitalism after showing off $7m brownstone

Stranger Things actor David Harbour has spoken sharply about capitalism, remarks that have drawn fresh attention because they follow a public glimpse inside his lavish $7 million Brooklyn brownstone, complete with costly French wallpaper.

Harbour, best known to Netflix viewers as Jim Hopper in the hit sci-fi series, shared his thoughts in August while promoting his latest HBO project, DTF St. Louis.

The 51-year-old actor sat down with Next Best Picture owner and editor-in-chief Matt Neglia for a wide-ranging conversation about making the series, collaborating with Jason Bateman and Linda Cardellini, and the ways his own life has influenced how he sees society.

During the interview, the Westchester native reflected on seeing the 1997 film The Ice Storm when he was younger, saying the movie helped him recognize what he described as a “capitalist mindset” in the culture around him.

Harbour remembered the film for its “weird sprawling houses.” Set in the 1970s, The Ice Storm centers on an affluent American family that appears polished and stable from the outside, while privately unraveling through dysfunction.

“There is this idea, I feel like, in — I don’t know if it’s the world or just our culture — but it’s just very binary: you’re either alone and you’re kind of like a weird bachelor or spinster or whatever…. Or you get a family, you get a house, and that’s your castle and those are your people and it’s like f*** the rest of the world,” Harbour said.

“There’s a very sort of capitalist, you know, mindset to this ideology, and I think there is something about the communal living in America that we all kind of long for. Not like a commune, but more like the idea of friendship, and common ground, and supporting each other, and taking care of each other, as opposed to these family structures, these nuclear family structures that exist independent of everything else,” he continued.

His comments come roughly three years after Harbour and his now ex-wife, Lily Allen, opened the doors of their upscale townhouse for a self-guided Architectural Digest tour, highlighting the high-end design choices and ornate details they had added throughout the home.

The English singer and her then-husband showed fans the place just after they had it renovated with the help of interior designer Billy Cotton and architect Ben Bischoff.

The space, which Architectural Digest referred to as ‘weird and wonderful’, was decked out in expensive furniture and pricey wallpaper by the French brand Zuber.

The wallpaper itself costs $60,000 to about $70,000 for a full 32 panels. But for large, custom rooms, the cost can exceed $100,000 for 48 panels.

In their apartment, which was sold in May for $7 million, a bathroom and living room area had wallpaper.

The house was originally listed for $8 million after Allen, 41, and Harbour separated following four years of marriage.

The four-level home features five bedrooms and four bathrooms, according to the listing.

The 2023 clip of their tour revealed an eye-catching tiger-print media room and a luxury kitchen inspired by The Godfather, to floral Parisian-inspired rooms and a stunning walk-in wardrobe filled with designer goods.

On the bottom floor, the pair created a quirky media room complete with tiger-print carpet and a matching sofa.

‘This is wild, the brainchild of my wife,’ Harbour said in the video.

The kitchen featured cream cabinetry, an oversized island bench, a range cooker, a dining table and lounge as well as an oversized chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

In their luxurious home, Allen and Harbour also had a lavish loungeroom they call the ‘garden room’.

The two of them married in Las Vegas in September 2020 after they started dating in 2019.

Harbour had become a stepfather to Lily’s daughters Ethel, 14, and Marnie, 13, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Sam Cooper.

In February 2025, several sources told People that their ‘marriage has been crumbling, adding that ‘they have split.’

Their divorce became that much more public after Allen released her West End Girl album in October 2025 that detailed the breakdown of their relationship.

It was also revealed that Harbour quietly sold his $2.7 million New York City condo while Allen was releasing her new music.

According to property records obtained by the New York Post, the one-bedroom, 1.5-bath in Nolita closed in August 2025.

He purchased the place for $2 million in 2017, the report stated.

That property was also featured in Architectural Digest in 2019, as Harbour showed viewers through the vintage loft.

In her recent album, Allen appeared to mention the space in her song ‘P**** Palace.’

In it, she described arriving there believing it was a space for Harbour to train, but instead she found odd belongings, including a bag full of sex toys and condoms, long dark hair on a pillow, and unmade sheets.
