Duval County inmate dies; cold case unit investigates

David Wayne King, 41, died two days after he was found unresponsive in his jail cell.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit is conducting an investigation following the death of a 41-year-old inmate from Duval County Jail who passed away two days after being found unresponsive.

David Wayne King was discovered unresponsive in his cell on a Thursday. Medical assistance was immediately administered by jail staff, and he was subsequently transported to a local hospital by the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department.

King was admitted to the hospital and died there Saturday.

The cold case unit is examining the events that may have contributed to King’s death. According to JSO, there were no incidents involving use of force against him or involving other inmates prior to his passing.

The Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating his cause of death.

King was arrested in March 2025, accused of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
