Two police officers shot, suspect 'actively firing at police' in Syracuse standoff lasting hours: report

In Syracuse, New York, a tense standoff unfolded on Saturday as two police officers were shot and a third was injured during an encounter with a gunman. The suspect has been “actively firing at police” for over four hours, prompting the evacuation of local residents.

The injured officers are reported to be in stable condition, according to Syracuse.com. The community remains on high alert as the situation continues to develop.

In a statement posted on X, the Syracuse Police Department described the situation as “still very active” as of 2:40 p.m. local time. They warned, “The suspect is actively firing at police,” and urged residents to “SHELTER IN PLACE, stay indoors, stay away from windows, and avoid the area entirely. Do not respond to the scene.”

The incident began around 6 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a person attacking a dog with a machete in a residential neighborhood just south of downtown Syracuse, according to Syracuse.com.

Meanwhile, New York State Police are reportedly on the scene to provide additional support.

The neighborhood is mostly made up of public housing complexes and low-income apartment buildings.

While executing a search warrant, two officers were shot and another was injured.

Nearby residents are being evacuated by bus, according to the outlet.

New York State Police, Syracuse SWAT, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Syracuse Fire Department and Syracuse University campus police are responding, according to Syracuse.com.

The Syracuse Police Department and New York State Police did not immediately respond to additional inquiries from Fox News Digital.
