Jacksonville police investigate early morning Westside shooting; victim stable

A man in his 20s was injured in a shooting on Ryan Avenue early Sunday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting that took place in the early hours of Sunday on Jacksonville’s Westside, which left a young man injured.

Authorities responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 4:40 a.m. in the 400 block of Ryan Avenue, located in the Edgewood area.

Upon arrival, officers did not encounter any victims or witnesses at the scene. However, they did find several spent shell casings scattered across the roadway, indicating a shooting had occurred.

Shortly thereafter, a man arrived at a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds. The police have reported that the victim is currently in stable condition.

“The victim, a male in his early 20s, suffered gunshot wounds to his upper thigh and middle finger,” Sgt. Johnson of the JSO stated during a news briefing on Sunday morning.

According to investigators, the victim was in the roadway on Ryan Avenue when he was shot. Authorities say he then contacted his girlfriend, who drove him to the hospital. Police say she did not witness the shooting.

“The Initial investigation revealed the victim was in the roadway, and on the 400 block of Ryan Avenue when he was shot, said Sgt. Johnson.” “He alerted his girlfriend, who drove him to the local area Hospital. The girlfriend did not witness the incident.”

Detectives say they are still working to determine exactly what led up to the shooting. Investigators are also trying to find witnesses and review surveillance footage in the area.

The shooting happened just steps away from Tipsy Bar and Grill, and investigators say they are looking into whether the incident may have stemmed from a gathering nearby.

“As I said, we haven’t located witnesses, yet we haven’t been able to talk to the victim, so we’re still kind of really early in the investigation,” Sgt. Johnson said.
