Maine’s closely watched Senate contest between Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Graham Platner, who has been backed by Bernie Sanders, has grown increasingly competitive in recent weeks. New polling released Thursday showed Collins moving ahead of Platner by three points, marking the first time she has taken the lead in the race.

A separate survey published this week, which showed Platner leading by two points, also highlighted potential trouble for his campaign. The findings suggested that the controversies surrounding Platner may be beginning to erode his support, including among voters who say helping Democrats regain control of the Senate is a major priority.
Politico reported that most voters surveyed said Platner’s series of controversies had either made them question their support for him or reject him altogether. The outlet also noted that Collins is drawing support from 10 percent of voters who would otherwise prefer Democrats to win control of the Senate.
