In a recent appearance on CNN’s “AC360,” New York City mayoral hopeful Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D) clarified controversial statements he made in 2023. He had previously asserted that “when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF,” referring to collaborative training sessions between the New York Police Department and the Israeli Defense Forces. However, Mamdani noted that he no longer believes the NYPD maintains a close relationship with the IDF.
During the segment, host Anderson Cooper played footage of Mamdani discussing the need for localizing broader issues. Mamdani emphasized that for these topics to resonate with individuals, particularly those facing daily challenges, the connections must be tangible and relevant. He explained that the metaphor of the “boot” was intended to illustrate how global dynamics can impact local communities.
Cooper pressed Mamdani for clarification, asking about the implications of his past comments. Specifically, Cooper wanted to know what he meant by the phrase that the NYPD’s actions were influenced by the IDF.
Mamdani explained, “It was a reference to joint training exercises that occurred between the NYPD and the IDF. That was the context of my statement,” he elaborated.
Interrupting, Cooper inquired if Mamdani still believed there was a close partnership between the two forces.
Mamdani clarified, “No, my concerns were about those specific training exercises. My current focus is on collaborating with the NYPD to enhance public safety across New York City. I have chosen to keep Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, recognizing her successful track record in reducing crime throughout the city’s boroughs.”
