Dajshon Asbell passed away Monday after being involved in a deputy-involved shooting. The incident started when deputies tried to serve him with arrest warrants at his home in Keystone Heights.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — According to the sheriff’s office, a man who was shot by Clay County deputies after an extended standoff on Friday succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Dajshon Asbell died Monday at the hospital following the deputy-involved shooting, which initiated as deputies attempted to deliver arrest warrants at his Indian Trail residence in Keystone Heights.

Deputies said Asbell was wanted for violating his probation from a previous battery conviction and on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence. The charges stemmed from a run-in Asbell had with deputies days earlier, during which the sheriff’s office said he fled.

When deputies responded to Asbell’s residence Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said he barricaded himself inside a utility shed on the property.

Deputies with the Crisis Negotiations Team spent hours attempting to negotiate with Asbell, but the effort was unsuccessful.

The CCSO SWAT team then used tear gas to get Asbell to surrender; however, the sheriff’s office said he refused to exit the shed. Crews then removed the front door of the building using a tactical vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said Asbell then emerged from the shed holding an edged weapon and charged at deputies.

At least three deputies shot Asbell. Additional less-lethal rounds and a K-9 were also used as he continued to resist arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies administered aid to Asbell before he was taken to UF Health Shands in Gainesville for treatment. He died days later.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office, is investigating the shooting.
