A 63-year-old man set himself ablaze Friday afternoon inside the lobby of a Lower Manhattan office building where Google maintains workspace, authorities said.
Police and fire officials said the man, whose name was not released, self-immolated shortly before 3 p.m. at the Hudson Street building near Vandam Street.
Several witnesses called 911, prompting an emergency response. The man was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center with burn injuries and was later reported to be in stable condition, officials said.
After the incident, a black backpack and scattered debris remained outside the property, which also includes offices for the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
Investigators had not immediately determined what was used to ignite the fire or what may have motivated the act.
Google leases 410,556 square feet in the Lower Manhattan building, according to a 2024 report by The Commercial Observer.
