Mica Miller’s Siblings: Pastor Husband Forced Final Hospital Stay

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or call 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

The siblings of Mica Miller are sharing new claims about the late worship leader’s difficult marriage, alleging that her estranged husband, South Carolina pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, arranged for her to be involuntarily admitted to a mental-health facility.

Mica’s family addresses the alleged hospitalization in “Death of the Pastor’s Wife,” a three-part true-crime docuseries that debuted Wednesday on Netflix. The series examines her life, her marriage and her death in April 2024, which authorities determined was a suicide.

Her relatives characterize the hospitalization as one piece of what they describe as a wider alleged pattern of coercive control within the marriage.

Her siblings allege that Mica’s final hospitalization was not voluntary. They claim Miller contacted a mental-health facility and set the admission in motion over his wife’s objections.

According to Mica’s siblings, she received a bipolar disorder diagnosis while engaged to Miller, who they say became heavily involved in managing her treatment. They allege she was hospitalized several times during the relationship, including not long before the couple married in 2017.

In a handwritten affidavit accompanying her divorce filing reviewed by News Outlet, Mica alleged that she had been abused “emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically.”

The family further said that while Mica was hospitalized, Miller took possession of her vehicle, phone and laptop. Her siblings said the computer contained intimate photographs of her. Mica later reported the alleged incident to police, according to the Netflix series.

Miller reportedly declined to participate in the documentary. News Outlet has reached out to his attorneys for comment.

The documentary relies on interviews with Mica’s relatives, friends, former Solid Rock Church members and divorce attorney, the streaming platform said.

Mica, 30, was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024, two days after serving Miller with divorce papers.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office concluded that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and closed its investigation. Miller has denied involvement in her death and has not been charged in connection with it.

He is, however, facing an unrelated federal prosecution over his alleged conduct toward Mica before her death.

A federal grand jury indicted Miller in December 2025 on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina on Dec. 18, 2025.

Prosecutors allege that he posted a nude photograph of Mica online without her consent, had tracking devices placed on her vehicle, contacted her more than 50 times in one day, interfered with her finances and damaged her tires.

Miller’s alleged cyberstalking put his wife in “reasonable fear of death and serious bodily injury,” according to the federal indictment, which added that his conduct “would be reasonably expected to cause [Mica Miller] substantial emotional distress.”

Federal authorities say that Miller also lied to investigators when he was questioned about damaging Mica’s tires. Investigators later found that Miller purchased a tire-deflation device online and sent messages to others referencing her vehicle, according to the indictment.

If convicted, Miller could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison on the cyberstalking charge and two years for making false statements, along with fines of up to $250,000. Miller pleaded not guilty and remains free on a $100,000 bond.

Mica’s relatives are also supporting a proposed South Carolina legislation, Bill 702, known as “Mica’s Law.”

The legislation would recognize coercive control, including sustained psychological, emotional and financial manipulation, within the state’s domestic-violence laws. The bill was referred to the state Senate Judiciary Committee but did not advance during the 2026 legislative session.
