Minneapolis mayor demands state be included in ICE-involved shooting probe, slams Pam Bondi's DOJ

On Friday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey appealed for state investigators to take part in probing the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. Frey expressed deep concern over how the Trump administration has characterized the incident.

This call for action follows the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s announcement on Thursday that it would step back from the investigation. The Bureau was informed by the FBI that it would not receive the necessary materials for a “thorough and independent” inquiry. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later commented, “They have not been excluded, but they don’t hold jurisdiction over this investigation.”

Mayor Frey emphasized the importance of integrity during such critical times, stating, “In Minneapolis, when a tragedy occurs, integrity is paramount. This isn’t a moment to sidestep rules but to uphold the law. We must not shy away from the facts; it’s crucial to pursue transparency throughout the process.”

Criticizing the Department of Justice led by Pam Bondi and the current presidential administration, Frey remarked, “The fact that they’ve reached conclusions about the incident is extremely worrying. Labeling the victim a ‘domestic terrorist’ and portraying the agent’s actions as defensive from the start indicates a predetermined narrative, which is highly troubling.”

Frey urged, “We seek the truth and request the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s involvement for a fair investigation. It is concerning that conclusions seem to be drawn prematurely by this administration. If there’s nothing to conceal, there shouldn’t be any resistance to including local experts. In Minneapolis, we have nothing to hide. Our aim is justice and truth.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

Frey said Friday, “There is some precedent that is important here.”

“There have been instances in the past where there was some form of shooting or an officer-involved killing that took place by federal agents or U.S. marshals or beyond, that did have local and state entities in control. By the way, we’re not even talking just about full control here,” the Democratic mayor said. “We’re talking about being at the table. We’re talking about an investigation that includes the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.”

Frey also insisted Friday that his city is “safe” and is not a “post-apocalyptic hellscape.”

“I have heard countless people talk about Minneapolis — many of them who have never been here — it is some form of post-apocalyptic hellscape. As a place that is dangerous. Well let me give you a statistic. 50% of the shootings that have happened thus far in Minneapolis this year have been ICE,” Frey told reporters, days after the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good.

“In other words, we’ve only had two shootings. One of them has been ICE. We are a safe city,” Frey added. “ICE is making it less so. We are a city of unity. But ICE is trying to divide us and tear us apart.”
