Nassau County Schools to Require E-Bike Permits for Middle and High School Students Riding to Campus

The Nassau County School District says e-bikes and e-scooters will be prohibited from elementary and intermediate school campuses.

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Students who ride e-bikes to school in Nassau County will face a new set of requirements beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, district officials announced Thursday.

Under the district’s new policy, e-bikes and e-scooters will not be permitted at elementary or intermediate schools.

“The safety of students, staff, school visitors, and others while on school property is of significant importance to the School Board,” the district said in a release. “An individual’s use of Electric Bikes (E-Bikes) on school property has the potential to present a safety hazard for the operator and to others (students, staff, visitors, pedestrians and motorists) while on school grounds. This policy is established to promote the safe and responsible use of E-Bikes on school property and applies to all students, staff and visitors while on District property.”

For campuses where e-bikes are allowed, students will only be able to bring them onto school property if they have a valid e-bike permit issued by the district.

To qualify for a permit, both the student and a parent must complete an E-Bike Permit Application. The application requires them to acknowledge that they have read and understand the district’s rules for e-bike use on campus. Students must also complete a safety course.

Proof that the safety course has been completed must be submitted along with the permit application, according to the district. Both documents can be mailed or dropped off at the district headquarters, located at 1201 Atlantic Ave.

After a permit is approved, the student will receive a sticker that must be placed on the head tube of the e-bike. The district said replacement stickers may be issued if a sticker or e-bike is lost or stolen, or if a student gets a new e-bike.

According to the school district, the e-bike policy will be periodically reviewed and revised as necessary to ensure its effectiveness in promoting safety within the district.
