An attorney representing Nolan Wells’ family has disclosed the final text message sent by the college athlete before his body was recovered from the water following a July 4 boating trip.
Wells, 18, texted “Thank you” to his aunt, Gabby, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 3, civil rights attorney Ben Crump said during a press conference.
Crump said the teenager, who disappeared after attending an Independence Day boat party on Horn Island, had also communicated with friends on Snapchat on the day of his death.

After reviewing Wells’ phone, Crump said he found “282” Snapchat messages exchanged within the teenager’s friend group.
A grand jury determined that Wells’ boating death was “consistent with drowning” and found no evidence of foul play. His family, however, says it continues to fight “for justice.”
