As New York City looks ahead to the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the City Council is moving to establish 26 new honorary street and public place co-namings tied to 9/11, while also calling on state officials to bring a formal 9/11 curriculum into classrooms.
The proposed commemorative names span all five boroughs and are intended to keep the memory of the attacks visible in neighborhoods across the city. Among them are “Never Forget Way” in Howard Beach, Queens, “East Side 9/11 Remembrance Way” on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and “9/11 Beacon Memorial Way” in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
Several of the new designations would highlight existing memorial sites and organizations connected to survivors and remembrance efforts, including “Brooklyn 9/11 Wall of Remembrance Way” in Coney Island and “Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk 9/11 Memorial Way” in Red Hook.
Brooklyn is set to receive the largest share of the honorary street names. In Manhattan, the list includes tributes to Marsh & McLennan employees who died in the World Trade Center, as well as FDNY companies that lost members in the attacks.
One of the more striking proposed names, “Fresh Kills 9/11 Recovery Heroes Way,” points to the Staten Island location where workers carried out the grim and painstaking task of searching through Ground Zero debris for human remains and personal effects.
Despite how the name may sound, “Kills” comes from the Middle Dutch word “kille,” meaning a riverbed or water channel, according to the city’s history of Freshkills Park. It is not a reference to the recovery operation conducted there after 9/11.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin’s office has also introduced a dedicated 9/11 remembrance webpage featuring an interactive map and background information on each of the honorary street co-namings.
The package of 9/11 co-namings was approved by the City Council on Thursday.
At the same meeting the Council also adopted a resolution calling on the state to teach kids about 9/11 at school.
“Its important that young people learn about the unity that persisted in our city,” Menin said.
