A Bronx street dispute turned deadly Wednesday when a 32-year-old city schools employee was fatally stabbed and his friend was wounded in a violent knife attack, police and law enforcement sources said.
Rashaun Shettlewood, who worked as a paraprofessional for the New York City Department of Education, was stabbed once in the chest around 3:30 p.m. near Davidson and West Tremont avenues in Morris Heights, according to sources. His 33-year-old friend was also attacked, suffering multiple stab wounds to the torso, police said.
Emergency responders rushed both men to St. Barnabas Hospital. Shettlewood, who lived roughly a mile from where the stabbing occurred, died from his injuries, while the older victim was reported to be in stable condition, authorities said.
Investigators believe the violence grew out of some kind of argument, though officials had not yet determined by Thursday what sparked the confrontation, law enforcement sources said.
The two victims were friends, but authorities were still working to determine whether the accused attacker had any prior connection to either man, the sources said.
Police arrested the suspected assailant, 37-year-old Brooklyn resident Jeffrey Jorge, at about 6:30 a.m. after officers allegedly found him carrying a knife near Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and connected him to the Bronx stabbing, authorities said.
Jorge faces charges including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, two counts of assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.
Police said Jorge has 13 prior arrests on his record, including a most recent arrest in May 2022 tied to a stabbing that allegedly took place in January of that year.
That victim, a 44-year-old man, was knifed at Davidson and West Tremont avenues — the same location as Wednesday’s attack — and was hospitalized in stable condition, cops said.
Jorge’s record also includes a Dec. 8, 2018 bust for allegedly menacing someone with a knife at 174th Street and Grand Avenue — and then biting an officer while resisting arrest, authorities said.
The disposition of those cases was not immediately known.
His arraignment in the murder case was pending Thursday evening.
