Ohio Mother of 16 Pleads Not Guilty in Child Abuse Case

An Ohio mother of 16 children appeared in court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the alleged discovery of her children living in horrific conditions. During the hearing, she repeatedly held her stomach.

Elizabeth Siders, 34, faces four counts of child sexual abuse and 19 counts of child endangerment, FOX 8 reported.

Dressed in an orange jail uniform, Siders stood before the judge while shielding and clutching her abdomen, according to The Daily Mail.

News Outlet has contacted Siders’ attorney, Thomas Stolly, for comment on the allegations and to ask whether his client is pregnant again.

Stolly told local media that Siders married at 15 and had “essentially been pregnant for the better part of two decades.” He said she had never experienced a full postpartum period or received the consistent medical care typically recommended for someone who has had 16 or 18 children.

“I have concerns about what effects those have had on her,” Stolly said.

Prosecutors accuse Siders and her husband of sexually abusing a minor in 2022. The alleged victim was not one of the 16 children found in the home, according to the report.

The child was reportedly in the couple’s care when the alleged abuse took place. Gary Siders Jr. has also pleaded not guilty, but a judge determined last week that he was incompetent to stand trial.

A court order prohibits Siders and her husband from having contact with each other.

The judge ruled Wednesday that Elizabeth Siders posed a flight risk and increased her bail from $250,000 to $550,000.

Investigators found the children in July, ranging in age from 17 months to 18 years, living in what authorities described as deplorable conditions inside a Hamden home.

Authorities had initially been investigating child sexual abuse allegations involving members of Siders’ extended family: Brandon Henderson, the longtime partner of Gary Siders Jr.’s sister, and Joshua Saunders, a cousin of the 16 children, FOX 8 reported.
