A 27-year-old woman died early Wednesday after the Tesla she was riding in slammed into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan, police said. The woman behind the wheel, who was injured in the crash, was taken into custody at a nearby hospital.
According to the NYPD, the 2024 Tesla first struck a mailbox at about 2:43 a.m. before crashing into scaffolding outside 315 Madison Ave. shortly before 3 a.m. The vehicle then continued several blocks east on East 42nd Street before finally stopping at Second Avenue.
Images from the scene Wednesday morning showed the Tesla badly mangled at the intersection.
Emergency responders took both women to a nearby hospital, where the 27-year-old passenger was pronounced dead.
The driver, also 27, was listed in stable condition and remained in police custody, though no charges had been filed, police said.
Authorities have not released either woman’s name while they work to notify relatives.
Investigators have not yet determined why the driver lost control of the Tesla, and the inquiry remains ongoing.
