New York City Swatch stores were scenes of turmoil as eager resellers and watch aficionados gathered in anticipation of a new release, leading to the unexpected closure of the SoHo location amid a tumultuous launch.
On Saturday morning, throngs of buyers converged on the SoHo and Times Square stores, capping off nearly a week during which sidewalks had turned into makeshift camps as enthusiasts queued up for the release.
The excitement was fueled by the latest collaboration between Swatch and luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet. This limited-edition bioceramic pocket watch is a fusion of Audemars Piguet’s renowned Royal Oak design with Swatch’s colorful POP series from the 1980s.
At the Times Square store, some eager customers gained early access before the official 10 a.m. opening, and the sought-after watches were completely sold out within an hour.
Meanwhile, the gathering at the SoHo store became so unruly that the store was forced to shut its doors.
This chaotic scene unfolded just days after an individual reportedly overdosed while waiting for the weekend release.
