ABC7 has released body camera footage capturing Franklin Park police’s response to a fatal shooting involving an ICE agent earlier this month in Franklin Park, Illinois.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the incident occurred on the morning of September 12, when a targeted traffic stop turned into a deadly confrontation. The man involved allegedly drove his vehicle toward officers, striking one in the process.

The footage, obtained from Franklin Park Police through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows police arriving at the scene near Grand and Elder Lane to discuss the situation with agents and eyewitnesses.

In the video, a man identified by DHS as an undocumented immigrant with a record of reckless driving is seen receiving medical attention on the ground after being shot by the ICE agent.

“He tried to run me over,” an ICE agent says.

An officer asks an ICE agent if there are any other suspects, and the agent responds, “He’s the only one.”

ABC7 blurred the body of 38-year-old Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, who was the man fatally shot, as well as faces of bystanders and witnesses.

Villegas-Gonzalez, who his family says, came to the United States more than 20 years ago from Mexico, died at the hospital.

Authorities state that the shooting happened as Villegas-Gonzalez attempted to flee in his vehicle. During this attempted escape, a statement claims an ICE officer was hit and dragged by the car, prompting him to discharge his weapon in self-defense.

That ICE agent spoke with a responding police officer on scene about his injuries.

“I had gotten dragged a little bit,” he says.

DHS initially said the ICE officer suffered severe injuries and was stabilized at the hospital before being released.

Cellphone video obtained by ABC7 that same day shows when ICE officers removed Villegas-Gonzalez from his crashed car.

The driver of the box truck Villegas-Gonzalez crashed into also spoke with police about what he said happened.

According to a driver at the scene, “They had him pulled over and blocked him with their vehicle. He reversed as they approached, and I was on the side. That’s when—I’m not sure if they shot before this, but he crashed into a trailer. I assume he was shot, as it’s unlikely he would crash otherwise.”

The box truck driver told the officer he heard one shot being fired.

This shooting received backlash from both city and state leaders.

In a response to ABC7, DHS says the officer who fired his weapon has been an ICE officer since 2021, and was the first time he fired his weapon in a use-of-force incident.
