Reported shooting at Virginia elementary school 'contained,' sheriff's office says

A reported shooting situation at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, has been brought under control, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office said.

Waynesboro Public Schools said Wednesday morning on social media that every Westwood student, teacher and staff member had been accounted for and was safe. The district also said students were being reunited with their families at a designated site while a temporary lockdown remained in place.

Shortly after noon, about two hours after the incident was first reported, the district announced that lockdowns across all Waynesboro schools had been lifted.

School officials thanked families for their patience and cooperation throughout the emergency response, adding that all Westwood students had been released to their parents or guardians.
