Baby found dead inside Electric Forest porta-potty was born alive: reports

A newborn discovered dead at a Michigan music festival was reportedly delivered alive inside the portable toilet where the infant was later found with the placenta and umbilical cord.

Sources told WoodTV that preliminary post-mortem findings showed fluid in the baby’s lungs and stomach, indicating the infant had been breathing after birth Sunday at the Electric Forest four-day festival in Rothbury.

Michigan State Police said an autopsy has been performed, though the agency noted it was “unable to confirm the results because we have not yet received the official autopsy report.”

The infant — described as a neonate, or a baby younger than 28 days old — was discovered by an employee of a restroom vending company who was conducting maintenance.

Authorities have not released a cause of death, but Lt. Pat Agema said Tuesday the case is not currently being classified as a homicide.

Police have not publicly identified the baby’s sex or the mother as the investigation remains ongoing.

Lew Langham, a former Michigan State Police detective, told Fox17 that investigators will likely focus on reviewing festival videos and photos in an effort to identify the mother.

“These incidents are few and far between,” he said.

“In this particular case, you’re just looking for someone who can help explain what happened.”

The harrowing discovery was made on the last day of the festival, which attracts around 40,000 people.
