Russell M. Nelson, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at his Salt Lake City residence after 10 p.m. local time, as announced by church officials.
Nelson was the oldest serving president in the history of the LDS Church and died peacefully, the church said.
Nelson began his service as an apostle in 1984 and ascended to the position of church leader in 2018. Throughout his ministry, he visited over 30 countries and U.S. territories.
He was also an internationally recognized heart surgeon who helped develop an artificial heart and lung machine.
