In the early hours of Wednesday, a Russian drone struck an unoccupied passenger train in Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv region, resulting in injuries to a railway worker, according to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba.
Kuleba further revealed that late Tuesday, there was another attempted drone assault on a train running between Dnipro in the east-central part of Ukraine and Kovel in the northwest. This attack was thwarted by railway workers, causing the drone to crash just a few meters from the locomotive.
Ukrainian national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported a concerning increase in Russian drone attacks targeting railway infrastructure, with rolling stock being a primary focus.
Since the beginning of March, there have been 18 recorded strikes, resulting in damage to 41 facilities, according to Ukrzaliznytsia.
The operator also noted that locomotives, freight cars, and specialized equipment used for infrastructure repairs have been among the targets. Additionally, railway depots and bridges have faced attacks over the past month.
Earlier this week, a Russian drone attack on a commuter train in the Dnipropetrovsk region resulted in one fatality and left seven others injured on Monday.
