It was a rough day for the Golden Arches in San Bernardino.
Firefighters battled a blaze at a San Bernardino McDonald’s on Friday after flames erupted near the restaurant’s indoor PlayPlace.
Crews extinguished the fire in roughly an hour at the restaurant in the 200 block of 40th Street, on the northern side of San Bernardino. The response unfolded amid sweltering temperatures in the Inland Empire as firefighters sprayed water over the building and its iconic sign.
The incident carried added significance in the city where McDonald’s began. McDonald brothers Richard and Maurice opened the first McDonald’s in San Bernardino in 1940.
“In the city known as the birthplace of McDonald’s, the response brought firefighters to one of the most recognizable names in the community,” the San Bernardino County Fire Department said in an Instagram post.
Video from the scene showed thick smoke filling the restaurant, with much of it escaping through the roof. Officials said lighter smoke was visible above the indoor playground, while the fire burned inside an exterior wall and in the space between the ceiling and roof.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from multiple directions, using hoses from outside the building, the roof and inside the restaurant.
“Battling high outdoor temperatures firefighters conducted an exterior fire attack from outside of the building, truck companies attacked the fire from the roof, while other firefighters conducted an interior attack from the inside of the building to suppress the fire,” officials said.
No civilians were injured, according to officials. One firefighter was taken to a hospital for a “heat-related issue.”
Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
