A small aircraft experienced a dramatic overturn while attempting to land at a Massachusetts airport on Thursday. Remarkably, the pilot walked away with only minor injuries, according to official reports.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the Bearhawk LSA-8X flipped over after landing at Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis around 3:30 p.m.
Responding swiftly, several police officers arrived at the scene to find the private plane, along with its lone pilot, inverted on the southern side of runway 24, as stated by the Barnstable Police Department.
The Hyannis Fire Department assessed the pilot’s condition, confirming that he sustained only minor injuries from the incident, according to WHDH.
Images from the scene depicted firefighters surrounding the silver aircraft, which appeared surprisingly intact despite the accident.
The mishap, involving this experimental plane, led to a minor fuel leak that soaked into the adjacent grass, necessitating a temporary halt to airport operations for nearly an hour, the news outlet reported.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will investigate the cause of the crash, authorities said.
