SoCal beach city declares coastal emergency ahead of King Tides peak

Newport Beach has declared another local emergency as the Orange County coastal city prepares for unusually high King Tides expected later this month.

Elevated water levels are forecast from Oct. 26 through Oct. 28. The first surge is expected Oct. 26, when tides are predicted to reach 6.5 feet, with possible highs of up to 8.3 feet.

The strongest conditions are anticipated Oct. 27. Tides are expected to rise to 6.7 feet and could peak as high as 8.5 feet. Water levels should remain elevated the next day, with a forecast tide of 6.6 feet.

Elevated tides are also expected into the morning of Oct. 28, when water levels could climb to a possible 8.4 feet.

Newport Beach has activated its emergency operations center to oversee flood-prevention measures and coordinate the city’s response.

“With ocean water levels already running higher than predicted, residents in low-lying and waterfront areas are strongly encouraged to take precautions now to protect their homes, vehicles and property,” city officials said Monday.

Officials have also approved the West Newport Beach Sand Replenishment Project. The effort will move approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sand from the Santa Ana River mouth to rebuild eroded stretches of beach between 36th and 62nd streets.

Residents can pick up free sandbags at three Newport Beach locations: 592 Superior Ave., 1600 W. Balboa Blvd. and the East Ocean Front Parking Lot near Balboa Pier.

The city previously closed all beaches and issued a local emergency declaration Oct. 9 as Tropical Storm Rachel moved toward Southern California. Ocean water swept across the Balboa Peninsula, raising concerns for waterfront homes, roads and businesses.
