U.K. Defence Secretary John Healey resigned Thursday after a clash with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government over military spending, handing the prime minister a political setback just weeks before a crucial NATO summit expected to include President Donald Trump.
His departure followed a dispute over the delayed Defence Investment Plan, the government’s long-awaited blueprint for military funding and readiness, as NATO members face renewed calls from Trump to increase defence budgets.
“John Healey’s resignation is a seismic moment for the government and the Ministry of Defence,” Ed Arnold, a senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, told News Agency.
“For the government, it creates a chain of political headaches, both in finding a replacement and in trying to get the Defence Investment Plan published,” Arnold said.
Healey had been engaged in intense last-minute talks with Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves over the size of the spending commitments and the timetable for delivering the plan.
