'Toy Story 5' premiere: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Taylor Swift, Joan Cusack walk red carpet

In a thrilling return to the big screen, beloved characters from the “Toy Story” franchise are back with “Toy Story 5,” where the familiar faces will face an intriguing new challenge: the clash between toys and technology.

The storyline introduces us to Lilypad, a new device that the growing Bonnie is drawn to, as she feels it helps her fit in with her peers. This technological allure poses a dilemma for her cherished toys, leaving audiences to wonder about their fate as Bonnie’s attention shifts.

At the film’s premiere in Los Angeles, Tom Hanks, the iconic voice of Woody since the series began, expressed his surprise at director Andrew Stanton’s decision to continue the saga. “But then he had this aspect of, ‘We gotta take care of Bonnie,’” Hanks explained. “And Jessie notices that Bonnie’s not happy because she’s not playing with her toys anymore. And that’s a powerful message. So let’s go!”

Fans will be delighted to know that alongside Hanks, Tim Allen returns as the spirited Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack reprises her role as the adventurous Jessie. Cusack remarked, “And that’s kind of really cool. I never thought I’d be the leading lady and it’s such a great movie.”

The film promises to deliver not only nostalgic charm but also a compelling narrative that resonates with the digital age, making “Toy Story 5” a must-watch for both new viewers and longtime fans of the series.

“And that’s kind of really cool,” Cusack said. “I never thought I’d be the leading lady and it’s such a great movie.”

Allen added, “I thought it took courage and insight to make fun of a company, Pixar and Disney, to do what we’re making fun of.”

Taylor Swift, who has a song in the movie, appeared at the premiere.

And no one was as happy as Conan O’Brien, who voices a potty training toy named Smarty Pants.

“I need this because my daughter will talk to me again,” O’Brien joked.

The film also brings back other toys we know and love, like Forky, who’s voiced by Tony Hale.

“When you see this group, they’re rooting for each other,” he said. “They got each other’s back. They’re there for each other. It’s community. That’s what we all want.”

Jeff Bergman wore his character, Mr. Potato Head, inside his sport coat. Kristen Schaal’s dinosaur character, Trixie, was painted on her dress. And Scarlett Spears, the voice of Bonnie, came in a custom “Toy Story” look.

This also marks the first time a “Toy Story” movie isn’t rated “G.” This one is “PG.”

You can see “Toy Story 5” in theaters beginning June 19.

Disney is the parent company of Pixar and this station.
