Move over, New York: Miami has officially claimed the title of America’s rudest city.
The city known for sunshine, palm trees and ocean breezes topped a new ranking of 70 US cities based on online complaints, social media criticism and internet searches related to boorish behavior. New York City placed fifth in the nationwide study.
Conducted by Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, the study analyzed Yelp reviews, Reddit discussions and internet searches involving rude behavior before combining the results into scores ranging from zero to 100.
Miami led the list with a score of 94.11, narrowly ahead of Las Vegas at 91.84.
Memphis, Tennessee, ranked third with 88.38 points, followed by Oakland, California, with 87.10.
New York City completed the top five with 83.58 points, indicating that the city’s reputation for brusque behavior remains intact — even if Miami has now taken the top spot.
New Yorkers can still claim one unflattering distinction: Residents there complain about rude behavior more than people in any other city.
New York had the highest share of Yelp reviews mentioning rudeness, with 3.34% describing unpleasant encounters.
That figure was higher than Miami’s 3.21% and Las Vegas’ 3.18%.
Miami led another category, too. It recorded 28.41 internet searches related to rude behavior for every 10,000 residents, the highest rate among all 70 cities studied.

The Northeast did not exactly emerge as a stronghold of politeness.
Newark ranked sixth nationwide with a score of 82.09, just behind New York City.
Detroit came in at No. 7 with 81.41 points, followed by Orlando at 81.17, Philadelphia at 78.48 and Los Angeles at 77.97.
Several other major cities ranked considerably lower on the rudeness scale.
Chicago placed 16th, Boston came in 34th and Seattle ranked 42nd.
At the opposite end of the list, Irvine, California, was named the nation’s politest city. It ranked No. 70 — last in the rudeness rankings — with a score of just 1.91.
Anchorage, Alaska, ranked 69th with 4.66 points, while Lincoln, Nebraska, placed 68th with 9.50.
Madison, Wisconsin, came in 67th with 11.81 points, and Boise, Idaho, rounded out the five least-rude cities at No. 66 with a score of 13.27.
“These figures capture patterns in online reviews, discussions and searches rather than measuring how every person in a city treats others,” said Natalie Buchwald, a spokesperson for Manhattan Mental Health Counseling.
“Rudeness is also shaped by context and expectations, so it’s best to view a citywide ranking as a snapshot of online signals, not a label for its residents.”
