WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined the Trump administration’s emergency request to reinstate restrictions on transgender-related treatment for inmates in federal prisons.
The administration had asked the justices to pause a lower court order blocking the policy while the broader legal challenge proceeds. The court rejected that request without offering an explanation, a routine approach for emergency applications.
Republican-appointed Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented, saying they would have granted the administration’s request to put the lower court’s ruling on hold.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January of last year, his administration has achieved a high success rate with emergency applications before the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court generally does not explain decisions issued through its motions docket, in part to avoid prejudging cases that could later reach the justices on the merits.
