Just hours following a mysterious sonic disturbance that shook homes throughout the Houston region, a woman reported that an alleged meteorite had smashed through her roof, creating a sizable hole and leaving behind a rock the size of a football.
On Saturday afternoon, residents flooded social media with expressions of alarm, describing what they perceived as a significant explosion reverberating through the Houston vicinity.
The Brenham Fire Department verified that they were summoned to investigate reports of a potential explosion near Highway 50. However, upon arrival, the units found no evidence to support these claims.
Fire officials indicated that several eyewitnesses reported observing a “green flash descending from the sky, accompanied by black smoke and a loud ‘boom.’”
Authorities also acknowledged that some sources speculated that the noise might have been the result of a “possible meteor.”
Sherrie James, who reached out to FOX 26 and the Ponderosa Fire Department after the incident, recounted how an “unusual rock” had pierced her roof, leaving a large hole in both her ceiling and floor.
Photos provided by James showed a football-sized black rock that appeared to be broken off a larger chunk of material.
Since there was no construction or trees nearby, the fire department told FOX 26 the rock was likely a part of the alleged meteor that was heard around Houston.
The American Meteor Society documented what it is calling a “fireball event” over Texas on Saturday, after receiving more than 100 reports.
Observers reported the event lasted anywhere between 1.5 seconds and 7.5 seconds, though it has not yet been validated by experts.
No other reports of damages were confirmed.
