Lake Tahoe Talbot Fire forces home evacuations in vacation retreat

A wildfire burning in the Tahoe National Forest has prompted concern for residents near an upscale Lake Tahoe cabin community, as flames continued to spread across roughly 75 acres into a second day.

The Talbot Fire ignited Tuesday afternoon in Placer County and its cause remains under investigation, CAL FIRE said. The blaze is burning near the Cedars community, with crews from the U.S. Forest Service in the Tahoe National Forest leading the firefighting effort.

Officials have kept an evacuation warning in place for Talbot Fire Zone 1. That alert means residents who may need additional time to leave — including people with pets or livestock — are being advised to depart early.

The fire was first reported Tuesday at about 16 acres, then estimated later that evening at approximately 150 acres. By Thursday morning, updated mapping revised the fire’s size to 75 acres.

One of the areas drawing attention is Tahoe Cedars, a historic residential enclave in Tahoma on Lake Tahoe’s west shore, known for its mix of rustic cabins and mountain homes.

The neighborhood sits within a highly desirable stretch of Tahoe real estate. While Tahoe Cedars includes traditional mid-century cabins alongside higher-end homes, nearby lakefront and luxury properties in exclusive pockets can command more than $4 million.

Firefighters also received aerial support Tuesday night, with night-flying aircraft assigned to help crews working to control the flames.

As of Wednesday night, police said the Talbot Fire was not threatening Truckee, though smoke from the blaze was expected to drift into surrounding communities.

Authorities continue to monitor the blaze as evacuation warnings remain in place.
